TBC State Tournament Day 2 recap, Day 3 preview

The tournament started to take shape as the business end of the tournament approaches with the path to a summer state title becoming clearer with pool play concluding and bracket play starting in the early stages. Here is a look back at a busy Day 2 and a look ahead of Day 3.

Division I

Decatur, Argyle win respective groups

It took a grind for both teams as Decatur pulled away from Wichita Falls Rider late and Argyle using a 9-2 run in the fourth quarter to pull away from a tough Stephenville squad. The two teams are on a collision course in the TBC state title game and the signs are showing it could happen with the 8-4A rivals.

Overtime drama

Weatherford picked up their second win in the group with an overtime win against Salado, 31-30, in the only overtime game so far in the tournament with the help of free throws. The Lady Roos eventually went on to bracket play and fell to Stephenville, 45-23.

Division II

Muenster flex muscle

The Lady Hornets went 2-0 on the day with wins against Nocona to win their group and against Ballinger to kick off bracket play. Sophomore Martie McCoy impressed with her play offensively and is showing to be a key asset to the Muenster system. The Lady Hornets will face off against a tough Bowie squad in the semifinals at 9 a.m. on Court 1 at Colleyville Heritage high school.

Nocona stun Lipan

It was a tale of two halves as Lipan executed well along with being aggressive as Nocona standout Averee Kleinhans picked up three fouls in the first half alone. It wasn’t the same Lipan team in the second with Kleinhans leading the comeback charge for the Lady Indians to advance to the semifinals with a 51-36 win. Nocona face off against Brock at 9 a.m. on Court 3 at Colleyville Heritage high school in the semifinals.

A grueling schedule for Maypearl

Maypearl did not play any pool play games on Day 1 but was filled with five games on Day 2, where they went 2-2 in the group and falling to Brock in their bracket play opener, 43-22. The overnight rest will be a crucial period for the Lady Panthers with Holliday coming up at 10 a.m. tomorrow.

Day 3 Preview

The final day on the girls’ side looks to be a big one on the division I side with two district 8-4A teams in Argyle and Decatur looking to be in prime position to face off against each other in the summer state title game. Wichita Falls Rider will look to deny the Lady Eagles that fate with their size and athleticism.

Decatur will open up their potential three-game stand bright and early against Glen Rose and the Lady Eagles look to utilize their speed in the rest of their games. Stephenville will enter their game well-rested if Decatur were to prevail in their quarterfinal game and will look to their interior offense to start a spark offensively.

On the division II side, Nocona shook up the top half of the bracket and opens the door for Brock but the Lady Indians, themselves, are not an easy out.

Muenster have been quietly making their way into the semifinals of the tournament but will be tested in all aspects on the floor when they face Bowie.
