Grapeland make their hire
The Sandiettes have turned into a perennial power in three seasons, under three head coaches. Their third coach in three years was named last Monday as Will Kollett comes in from Cushing, where he coached the boys side. Kollett will be taking the head volleyball position in addition to the head girls basketball position. Prior stints include the head girls basketball gig at Broaddus.
UIL takes no action on shot clock
As the NFHS rejected the use of the shot clock, the UIL held their legislative council meetings last week and the shot clock was on the agenda.
The UIL elected not to take action on the item, meaning that it was neither approved or rejected, and it will still be on the agenda in the next legislative council meeting. It does mean that it will officially not be in the game for the 2020-21 season.
A committee member stated the financial impact of the shot clock for school districts and a personnel issue to operate the clock.
Other items on the docket were the editing of the bonus rule and the implementation of the charge circle. The proposed ruling for the bonus rule was after five fouls, teams would enter in a double bonus scenario to improve the flow of the game. Both items also saw no action.
Home court advantage has also been a taking point for district champions in the playoffs and it will continue for just football but schools can do this if an agreement is met within the corresponding districts.
UIL did emphasize that any changes made to NFHS, they will discuss to amend.
Panhandle changes
Plainview made their hire for the future as they looked to Adrian Alfaro for their new girls basketball coach. Alfaro has built Lockney to a consistent program that is making playoffs and is starting to make a tradition of their postseason experience.
Moving north, Dumas made their hire as Jerry Cathey takes over the helm of the Demonettes. Former coach Austin Spain departed his post to take an assistant coaching job at Lubbock Cooper.
Klondike make a hire
Klondike made their hire this past Monday, June 22, and it’s a familiar name to Lubbock ISD girls basketball staff. Kelsey Canavan, an assistant at Monterey, was tabbed the new head girls basketball coach at Klondike. Canavan brings in seven years of coaching experience, with five years under coaching great, Jill Schneider.
San Antonio Lee hire Henderson
Henderson comes in from San Antonio MacArthur, where she was an assisstant and possesses 18 years of coaching from as high as Division I to the middle schools ranks.
