Two Kingsville High School coaches have been terminated after an incident at an away volleyball game.

KRIS 6 first reported that head volleyball coach Makylah Sandoval and the assistant coach were terminated. This followed an incident that included leaving kids unsupervised after playing an away game.

The assistant coach involved was also head girls’ basketball coach Jasmine Arrollo.

“While other off-duty district coaches were present, the assigned coach’s decision to leave the team unsupervised, regardless of circumstances, or intent, fell short of the standards held for all staff responsible for student safety.” said Dr. Luz Martinez in a written statement.

Both coaches have been permanently removed from their athletic coaching duties within Kingsville ISD after an internal investigation was completed.

As a response to the termination of the two coaches, the athletic booster club at Kingsville ISD has recently disbanded.

“All funds will be allocated to the athletic programs we have worked hard to support, as we refuse to support an administration that would take such drastic action,” the booster club wrote on Facebook.

There is now a growing petition and community support to reinstate the two coaches.

“The District recognizes that this outcome has spark strong emotions within the community.” Martinez wrote. “However, it is critical that frustration or division not be directed towards students or their families. These young student-athletes handled a very difficult situation with maturity, and no student should be blamed for decisions made by adults entrusted with their safety and care.”
