The UIL State Executive Committee meeting met on Monday to hear a case with Zephyr ISD in terms of basketball recruiting.
Zephyr head girls’ basketball coach Dara Chandler was issued a public reprimand, two-year suspension and a 10-game suspension in violation of recruiting. Zephyr ISD was also issued to have all coaches have additional training on UIL rules.
The meeting comes in lieu of turmoil at Richland Springs ISD, where Chandler was reassigned in early May. Chandler’s last day on Richland Springs ISD grounds was on May 13 and officially ended her contract on July 31, 2025, ending her six-year tenure at the helm of the Lady Coyote program.
After the school year, Richland Springs saw a total of 15 students transferring out and went to other surrounding school districts, including Zephyr.
Of the 15 students, four were high school girls’ basketball players along with three junior high students.
With the new additions, the transfer students did play with Zephyr during the summer but were not officially enrolled at Zephyr ISD.
An additional hearing may be held at a later date to determine each athlete’s case for eligibility.
