The LCU team camp has wrapped up after a competitive three days of action as teams are looking to gain experience for the upcoming season. With every event, there are the players that grab the attention of fans, coaches and the media with their performance. These players are not the best players on each team, but the key plus-one scorers that will be a key push for their respective teams on the scoresheet. We highlight five players that turned heads during the weekend’s action.
Rachel Perkins, Harper
Perkins vocal leadership and long-range shooting were on full display during the weekend and look to give the Lady Horns an inside-out game this season that will be hard to stop in a competitive 29-2A that might see Harper in the race for the top two spots.
Â
Bella Sipowicz, Lubbock Cooper
Prior to injury, Sipowicz has come a long way in developing her game in the post and has become a main stay on both sides of the court for the Lady Pirates. With her being sidelined, Hannah Zientek also impressed in her performance against Canyon.
Â
Dabria Blackwell, Brownfield
With all attention going to Gabi Fields for Brownfield, the post presence is not looked at hard enough for a state champion Lady Cub squad. In the early stages of the game, the boards were dominated by Brownfield and credit goes to Blackwell being strong in the paint and also was solid in stretch situations. With the core of the starting lineup returning, expectations are high once again for the defending 3A state champions.
Â
Taylor Thomas, Canyon
A large part of the success that Canyon saw in the championship game was due to Taylor Thomas. Her defensive effort with her length along with making key plays that saw a foul with .3 seconds left and the game-winning free throw.
Â
Calyn Dallas, Lubbock Cooper
It is very rare to see a West Texas guard that has the length and shooting range that Dallas showcases with each performance. Dallas’ game has a little bit of a shade of Kevin Durant and her range is what impresses fans and coaches with her pure scorer playmaking. If you are a college coach that has not had a chance to get a look, now is a good time to before you miss out.
We also were impressed by:
Taytum Bell, Amarillo
Avery Velasquez, Shallowater
Camryn Armes, Gruver
