This week will be widely known as the week that will shape the 2020-21 season in the landscape picture.

We do know that next season, we will see two household names in coaching who will not be on the sidelines in 2020-21.

Long-time Canyon head coach Joe Lombard announced on Tuesday that he will be “taking his talents to retirement.” Lombard holds the second-highest win career total in the nation, behind Granbury’s Leta Andrews, which counts 1,416 wins.

Speculation will turn to the new head coach, in which many fans will naturally tab Lombard’s son, Tate, as the next head coach of the highly-decorated Lady Eagle program but the school district will still have to turn to the usual process when opening the job.

Corpus Christi Carroll will have a new coach in the 2020-21 school year as veteran coach Leticia Canales announced her retirement.

Canales, who started her career in McAllen with Memorial, recorded 840 careers wins and holds 10 regional tournament appearances and a state title game appearance in 1999, where they fell to Mansfield High.

KAUFMAN GET THEIR HIRE

Kaufman picked up a familiar name in Dallas-Fort Worth girls basketball, as Amy Ingram was named to the head girls basketball coaching position at the 5A program.

Ingram, who returns on the sidelines after a season’s absence after holding a stint at Birdville, will look to turn around the program, in which is currently seeing a playoff drought since 2016 as she will enter her tenth year in coaching and has seen seven straight playoff appearances.

NEW PROGRAMS MAKE THEIR MOVE

New programs have made their respective foot in the coaching change front and Comal Davenport, Katy Jordan and Lake Belton have found their coaches moving forward.

Davenport hired San Antonio (North East ISD) Lee Dru Weeaks as their head coach. Weeaks led Lee to a playoff berth after a 28-year drought, where they won the district title.

Lake Belton bring in former Southwest Assemblies of God player and former Riesel head coach Taylor Hill.

The Lady Broncos will not be fielding a varsity squad until 2022-23, but the move will bring the tradition and foundation being set for the program moving forward.

In Houston, Katy Jordan bring in Katy Taylor girls basketball assistant coach, Andy Rice, to lead the program in their first year.

THE RECRUITING TRAIL

Each week, TXHSGBB.com will showcase the top commits and recruits that have tagged us in their respective highlight clips from this past season.

Trinity White, McKinney

Trinity White made a name for herself at the UIL state tournament last month, and it caught the eye of the scouts.

She made her announcement that she will be committing to Butler University.

White was the second-highest scorer for the Lady Lions and averaged 5.7 rebounds per game, a team high. She collected first team all-district honors.

Kaylee Rendon, Frenship

Rendon was resilient in her senior year, after playing her first full year of basketball despite picking up a pair of ACL injuries. She led the team in scoring in 2-6A play and was tabbed as an TABC all-region selection and first team all-district.

On Monday, April 6, she announced her commitment to the Flying Queens of Wayland Baptist University.

Notable hires

Keisha Collins (Odessa Permian)

Collins comes in the program after a tenure as an girls basketball assistant and head track and field coach at El Paso Ysleta. Collins is a alumni of Midland High, graduated in 2010, as she makes her return to the Permian Basin. Permian had a 7-25 mark last year and are going on their third coach in three years.
