It was an action-packed week for girls’ basketball across the state with plenty of off-season happening that include the Texas Basketball Championships crowning two new summer state champions, an action-packed team camp at LCU and a pair of standout players from the Cen-Tex region announcing their college commitments.

TBC summer state tourney champions crowned

Like 7-on-7 is to football, TBC is to basketball as the tournament is usually a good barometer for the season ahead as a new pair of summer state champions were crowned over the weekend. Stephenville converted a basket from Alee McClendon in the second overtime period that pushed the Lady Bees to the title in the Division I side.

In division two, Muenster led Brock for most of the game until in the final stages, where Brock slowly chipped away the deficit and ended the final quarter on an 11-2 run to win the summer state title.

Wichita Falls Rider was a team that impressed with their youth and athleticism as they held their own against Argyle and took the five-time state champions in overtime.

Amarillo, Shallowater win LCU team camp

Two west Texas blue-blood programs battled their way a tough field in the LCU team camp with Amarillo High avenging an earlier loss to Frenship to win the team camp.

Shallowater also picked up the red division championship, where they topped Brownfield.

A win for Texas State women’s basketball fans

It was a big week off the hardwood if you are a Texas State women’s basketball fan.

Austin Westlake standout Presley Bennett and Cedar Park’s Nicole Leff announced their verbal commitment to Texas State.

Bennett will be a senior this season for the Lady Chaps while Leff returns for her final year, in which she averaged 14.6 points per game and 7.8 rebounds last season.

Dallas Lincoln, Canadian hires

Dallas Lincoln is the latest vacancy that has been filled as Darrin Samuell, who comes in over from Arlington High.

Samuell has held experience at Mesquite ISD, where he coached at West Mesquite for three years and five at Mesquite Horn. He has also led his alma mater, Dickinson, to consecutive state title game appearances in 2007 and 2008.

Lincoln was a state semifinalist a season ago, where they lost to eventual state champions, Argyle.

Canadian also filled their vacancy for the head girls basketball job with now-former Farwell girls basketball coach Aaron Marks accepting the new gig.

Farwell have advanced to the area round under Marks in a tough region and trades to another tough and knee-deep region with a number of teams having at least picking up 20 plus wins last season.
