Brownfield advance to first regional final since 1996

Gabi Fields can do it all.

The junior guard scored 21 to lead all scorers as Brownfield run enters historic proportions with a 65-58 victory over a talented Peaster squad.

The victory sees the first regional final for the Lady Cubs since the 1996 season.

Fields entered foul trouble with two quick fouls in the first quarter, which drew Peaster even in the late stages of the second quarter and took a three-point lead at the halftime break.

Then, Fields took over, scoring 17 in the second half alone that gave the push Brownfield was looking for to lead them to victory.

Peaster did not have much post play but it was quite noticeable that the Lady Cubs were dominant on the glass with their physical interior play that was also a key for an early spurt in the first half.

Brownfield face Shallowater in the regional final on Tuesday, 5:30 p.m. at Frenship with the winner advancing to the state semifinals.

Shallowater’s last loss came at the hands of the Lady Cubs on February 4, 2020 in a 47-44 loss at Brownfield.

Bridgeport’s defense the key in rout of Seminole

Bridgeport defense has been a key throughout their postseason run and Saturday night showed no different.

The Sissies defense pitched a shut-out in the third quarter while the Maidens couldn’t find a basket to keep within striking distance as junior Jade Hall led all scorers with 11 points in a 37-20 victory.

Bridgeport returns to the regional final, facing a Canyon team in Childress on Tuesday with a time to be determined.

It wasn’t easy for Bridgeport to get a basket either with the hard-nosed defense Seminole brought and the full court press that was tough to break to create a physical battle on the boards.

Ponder fight off tough Winnsboro team

The physicality and length of Ponder has been creating tough matchups for opposition this season.

On paper, it looked like Winnsboro had that edge.

Ponder’s scoring duo of Karly Ivy and Tate Wells came at a key moment in fourth with a Ivy midrange jumper from the free throw line and a Wells 3 that gave Ponder the key push in a 73-66 victory over the state representatives from Region II last year in 3A.

Ponder, winners of 13 straight games, advance to the regional final to face Gunter, who also are riding momentum of their own in a 14-game winning streak.

Other statewide notes

Plano East matched their deepest playoff run since 1993 in a 56-42 victory over Southlake Carroll in the regional semifinals.

In the same region, South Grand Prairie hit 14 3’s to top Keller, 71-40 to set up a clash with Plano East on 7 p.m., Tuesday at the Wilkerson-Greines Event Center in Fort Worth.

Kiara Jackson, a UNLV signee, and Kendall McGruder, a North Texas signee, each tallied 17 points a piece in the victory. Nxerro Maluw chipped in 11 ponts.

South Grand Prairie have lost their past two regional final games in their recent trips, falling to Duncanville in 2017 and De Soto in 2019.

De Soto and Duncanville will meet for a third time this season as both teams won their respective regional semifinal games against Houston-area opposition.

Despite a brawl grabbing the headlines in the second meeting of the two teams back in district play, the physicality of De Soto and the athleticism of Duncanville will be key in earning a victory for the respective teams as they are set to face off at 7 p.m., Tuesday in Waxahachie.

Plainview stunned Wichita Falls Rider in what was a shooting clinic for the Lady Bulldogs, hitting 13 3s to hold on to the 69-56 victory over a tough Rider team.

Majik Esquivel led Plainview in scoring with 24 points, scoring five threes, Kylie Bennett pitched in 19 points and Katy Long added 17 in the victory.

Dallas Pinkston makes school history with their first regional final appearance in school history with a 56-55 victory over school history.

Pinkston will face Gilmer in the regional final at a time and place to be finalized.

Hardin-Jefferson were held to below 80 points all year, as they overcame a first round deficit en route to a 55-45 victory over a tough China Spring team.

Duke commit Ashlon Jackson led all scorers with 21 points.

Lexington and Fairfield will set up the highly-anticipated 3A Region III final as Fairfield cruised to a 72-25 victory over Huntington.

The Lady Eagles enter the game as the more battle-tested team, enduring two overtime games and facing a tougher path.

Snook earned a tough upset win over Mason behind the scoring duo of Jaycie Brisco and Avery Kovar.

Brisco, who scored 18 points to lead the team in scoring, and Kovar, who pitched in 16 points to lead the Lady Jays in their first regional final since 2013. The Lady Jays will face San Saba at a time and place to be determined.
