College Station upset Richmond Foster

It was a tale of two halves for both teams, as Foster went nine-for-nine from the free throw line as the defense did it’s part to take a 27-24 lead at halftime.

College Station wasn’t playing so bad either, shooting 10-23 from the field but were also in foul trouble and had turnovers.

Then the second half was a different story.

The Lady Cougars rode a 13-0 run to start the second half to take the lead, 38-30, as they offense found their sync in the half.

The defense also played a key role in the victory, holding Foster to shooting two-for-13 from the field during the key stretch.

College Station await the winner of Pflugerville Hendrickson and Beaumont United.

Lubbock Cooper advance to first regional final since 2008-09 season

Autumn Moore stepped up in a huge way for the Lady Pirates, as she led the team in scoring 16 points as Lubbock Cooper advanced to the regional final for the first time since the 2008-09 season with a 59-54 win over a tough Mansfield Legacy team.

The defense was key in the victory along with the offensive production of Calyn Dallas, who scored 12 points. Catalina Cortez chipped in 10 points.

The downside was senior Avrie Douglas had to come off the court, who picked up an injury in the first quarter.

Lubbock Cooper now await the winner of Plainview and Wichita Falls Rider, who play at 4 p.m. in Childres

Other statewide notes

Claude used their size and the play of Maddox Scoggins to punch their ticket to the regional finals for the first time since 2018 with a win over Sands, 42-31. 

Dodd City rolled through in their regional quarterfinal game, 62-14 against a solid Huckabay squad. The defense for the Lady Hornets was on full display, not allowing the Lady Indians a field goal in the entire game, with all points coming from the free throw line. 

Lady Hornets face Saltillo in the regional final with details to be announced.

Key games to watch

Ponder (27-3, W10) vs. Winnsboro (W13); 4 p.m., Saturday, Prosper

A potential de-facto regional championship game sees Ponder facing a tall task in Winnsboro, who have been steamrolling their way to the regional semifinals. 

Ponder are a physical and scrappy team that are well-coached under coaching legend, Jim Avery. 

Winnsboro have solid play with sophomore center Faith Acker being a key playmaker in the interior. The guard play is what will separate the two teams with senior Rachel Pinnell being the signal-caller for the Lady Raiders.

Ponder are a junior-laden team that have been picking up big wins of their own and recently fought off Rains in a tough, chippy affair, 53-36. 

How can the two teams handle adversity throughout the game?

Brownfield (25-1, W3) vs. Peaster (26-4, W8); 1 p.m., Saturday, Tuscola Jim Ned

If you are into guard-play, this matchup is for you.

Brownfield, highlighted by junior guard Gabi Fields, has been a key part of the success for the Lady Cubs in their playoff run. 

Peaster also have star guards of their own in Brooklyn Bosher and Payton Hull, who have been lighting up the scoresheet throughout the season. 

The big key in the game is which team can control the interior on both sides of the ball. 

Plainview (19-8, R3) vs. Wichita Falls Rider (25-2, W5); 4 p.m., Saturday, Childress

Plainview head coach Adrian Alfaro has done a tremendous job that many may not have thought could be possible, filling the big shoes of Danny Wrenn, who annouced retirement during the offseason.

They will now run into an Rider team that is filled with talent, led by Jaylynn Bristow, who just recently surpassed the 1,000 career point mark as a sophomore.

Bristrow also has a supporting cast in Jill Leslie, who also adds size in the post to create a lethal scoring threat and tough interior defense.

Plainview will be to get Rider into foul trouble to gain control of the game and to settle into half-court sets.

Rider do have a deep shooting threat in Addison Self to compliment the post play.

The interior defense will be key for Plainview. Which set of guards can step up to lead their team over the finish line?
