Samantha Wagner leads Reagan to 60-55 victory over Austin High

Trailing by 10 in the third quarter, it’s tough for any road team to make a comeback.

For Reagan, Samantha Wagner was ready to put her team on her shoulders.

The standout sophomore scored 29 points, collected 11 boards and recorded four steals as Reagan steal a win on the road against the 26-6A district champs, 60-55.

Reagan advance to face Vista Ridge, who got behind Washington signee AJ Marotte’s double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds in a tight 57-51 victory.

Normangee upset Schulenburg

What is a night of playoff basketball without any upsets?

The Normangee defense has been pivotal this season and it proved to be a key point as the Lady Panthers closed the game on a 9-1 run.

Normangee’s ability to the take the ball on the drive is hard to stop and adding athleticism adds another edge to Normangee’s game that is underrated.

Blanco advance to regional quarterfinals for first time in school history

Blanco have been flying under-the-radar but have been receiving rankings love from the TXHSGBB rankings.

Now in this stage of the season, they let the state put them on notice.

Senior and Angelo State signee Presley Young scored a game high 44 points for Blanco to top Columbus, 55-46.

The Lady Panthers are area champions for the first time in school history and face a tough Palacios team in the regional quarterfinals.

Other statewide notes

Stevens punched their ticket to the regional quarterfinal for the first time since the 2013-14 season after defeating Weslaco, 52-41. Competing in a tough Northside ISD district, the Lady Falcons are battle-tested and await the challenge that is Laredo United.

Richland Springs fell to a tough Strawn team, who make their first appearance to the regional quarterfinals since the 2014-15 season as it sets up a district rematch against Huckabay.

New Braunfels Canyon punched their ticket to the regional quarterfinals for the first time since the 2011-12 season after a 70-47 victory over San Antonio Lanier. Chayse Goetz led the way in scoring with 15 points. Aniya Hicks and Kyla Malone tallied 10 points respectively.

Their reward? Cedar Park, who have been inside the top three all year long. The Lady Timberwolves continued to flex their muscle in Region IV with a 92-44 victory over San Antonio Highlands with Gisella Maul leading the team with a double-double, scoring 23 points and tallying 10 rebounds. Shelby Hays also had a double-double with 14 points, 13 rebounds and six assists. Alisa Knight pitched in 18 points and three rebounds.

Hull tallied a game high 44 points along with Bosher adding 20 points en route to a 88-46 rout of Coahoma.

Peater await the winner of Nocona and Wall in a highly-anticipated matchup.

Tuesday’s key games to watch

Mesquite Horn (23-4, W10) vs. Duncanville (R11); 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, South Oak Cliff

Jasmine Shavers has been the key standout for Horn throughout the season and the ability to make big plays on the big stage is nothing short for the senior. However, Shavers will have her hands full in getting past a tough and perennial power Duncanville side that knows how to perform on the biggest stages, year-in and year-out. Can Mesquite Horn pull off the upset?

Georgetown (24-4, R25) vs. Boerne Champion (22-3, R26); 6 p.m., Tuesday, Buda Hays HS

If you are a defensive-minded basketball fan, this game is for you.

It will be a clash of styles in this game as Georgetown are known for putting in a hard to stop defense that doesn’t allow many points.

Boerne Champion will be looking to run the floor with each possession and foul trouble will be key for the Lady Chargers in hopes of staying clear of any calls against Champion.

Georgetown will look to slow down the tempo with half-court sets.

Which defense comes up big for their respective team?

Rockport-Fulton (23-4, W26) vs. Boerne (21-4, R28); 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, George West

The Lady Pirates are playing very well as of late, carrying a 19-game winning streak heading into this matchup against a tough Boerne team.

Boerne do have ‘the girl,’ in Jamie Ruede and are well-coached. The guard play will look to be aggressive and see more frequent drives in this matchup with 6-2 junior Kaylee Howell being a key part of the Lady Pirate interior defense.

It will be imperative for Howell to stay out of foul trouble as the interior matchup favors Rockport-Fulton.

Guard play will be key in a big matchup in order for both teams to get over the hump.
