Shallowater prevail in regional heavyweight clash with Canadian

It was a physical battle that was worth the price of online tickets.

Canadian had Shallowater on the ropes early after the first half, leading by a slim margin, 22-19.

Then, Bree Brattain took over.

Despite scoring only two points and carrying two fouls, the junior standout scored 23 points in the second half, which gave Shallowater the second half push over a tough and well-coached Canadian team, 55-47.

Junior post Mattie Boyd led Canadian in scoring with 17 points.

Dulles remain perfect, fight off upset-minded Jersey Village

In the big school game of the day, it was a back-and-forth battle between two of the best teams in Houston, outside of Cypress Creek.

Dulles found themselves behind after three quarters and found a way to win in a tug-of-war game, and prevailed in a tough victory, 75-68 over a solid Jersey Village team.

For Jersey Village, Gia Adams recorded a game high 24 points and six assists. Briana Peguero finished with 19 points. Freshman Ma’Riya Vincent finished with a big game with a double-double, 14 points and collecting 14 rebounds.

Dulles is the only Fort Bend ISD team remaining in the postseason and their first appeance in the third round since the 2008-09 season.

Atascocita upset Clear Springs

Atascocita is a team not to sleep on and if you are not playing your ‘A’ game, things could be difficult for you in-game.

That proved to be the case for Clear Springs.

Atascocita’s Robin Whitehead led all scorers with 30 points and eight rebounds with the Lady Eagles picked up a 63-45 victory over regional power Clear Springs.

Blake Matthews added 16 points and six rebounds. Kori Fenner tallied 11 points and collected seven boards in the winning effort.

Niyah Johnson recorded a double-double for Clear Spring in her final high school game, recording 13 points and tallying 20 rebounds. She is committed to playing for Abilene Christian.

Grapevine advance on buzzer beater

If Saturday’s action was summarized in one game, Grapevine/Mansfield Summit would be one of the games.

Grapevine post Emery Kirkpatrick took an open look on the right wing, hitting nothing but net as the Lady Mustangs punched their ticket to the regional quarterfinals since 2016.

The reward? Mansfield Legacy awaiting them.

Bridgeport outmuscles Stephenville

From the first tip, Bridgeport settled in and executed well offensively.

Most importantly, the defense stepped up each quarter, tightening their grip on the game.

Senior post Ashley Ingram, who tallied 19 points on the night, also scored her 1,500-career point.

Other statewide notes

Lexington advances to the regional quarterfinals for the first time since 2004, fighting off a tough Troy team, 53-49 in overtime. Lexington are led by Shelby Ray, a Long Beach state commit and the Cooper sisters, Ashunti and Elexus.

The first big storyline in 1A also came on Saturday, with D’Hanis pulling off the upset win over district champion Moulton, 54-34. This is the Cowgirls’ first regional quarterfinal appearance since the 2014-15 season.
