COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A solid Texas contingent of 11 players survived the first cut of the U.S. under-16 national team in hopes of making the national team for the FIBA Americas competition that will be held next month.

Now, only four players are in hopes of representing not only their school, but their state as well.

The incoming sophomore class includes De Soto’s 6-5 center Tionna Herron, six-foot guard Ashlon Jackson from Hardin-Jefferson, 6-4 forward Jada Malone from a private school, The Village, in Houston.

An incoming freshman is making her splash for hard looks with Samantha Wagner, an eighth grader from Barbara Bush Middle School in San Antonio, is the only middle school player in the second cut of the team trials.

The coaching staff also has Texas flavor with De Soto head girls basketball coach Andrea Robinson on the staff as a court coach and Kelly Carruthers, the head girls basketball coach at Arlington Bowie, as an assistant coach.

Tomorrow will conclude the final day of the trials until training camp begins to finalize the U16 roster for the FIBA Americas U16 Championships at a location to be annouced on June 16-23.
