Sands defense has been one of the best, if not, the best 1A defense in the state.

Today, the Lady Mustang defense proved again why it was so tough.

Elysa Martinez, who finished with 10 steals that tied the state record for fourth best in the state tournament, pulled the strings in a 29-0 run that started in the second quarter that gave the Lady Mustangs it’s first state title in school history with a 60-33 victory over Robert Lee.

“They were a little tight and then they just settled in,” Sands head coach Ben Connell said. “The engine will warm up like a car and it will get going.”

“Coach Connell, for the past state games wanted us to push the ball, get buckets and come back and play defense,” Martinez said, who finished with a game high 22 points.

Morrow, who caps off her career with a state title, finished with 20 points, six rebounds and two assists in her final game as a Sands Lady Mustang.

Robert Lee had the game tied at 14 heading into the seven minute mark in the second quarter.

In the span of the seven minute mark in the second quarter to the 4:27 mark in the third, Sands recorded 11 turnovers in the stretch and in both quarters combined, the Lady Mustang defense scored 13 points off the extra possessions, which proved to be the backbone to the state title victory.
