Nick’s Notes: Uncertainty of basketball season rises after first week of football

As the first week of football is in the books, we are left with more questions than answers upon the future of basketball, more importantly, more basketball fans being more nervous about what could affect the sport.

Prior to the season starting, guidelines were set by various school districts for fans to abide by in order for football to take place with masks and social distancing being implemented.

Now, the UIL has left the procedures to the local school districts hands.

For some, enforcing the guidelines and rules for social distancing has been left frowned upon with none being enforced.

I attended a local football game on Friday and the scene was very unsettling for the future of basketball.

The local football game I attended was not the only scene with no guidelines or masks being mandated by the school.

Reported tweeted out in the Austin and Metroplex areas respectively that the scenes remain similar with no one observing the governor’s orders and masks.

Now more than ever, fans have the ability to control the future of the season, by abiding by the governor’s and UIL’s orders for fans.

Yes, it is the first week in the books and understandably so, there will be some leniency with some fans attending their first sporting event for a period over time. It is also the first week of football and the first test for school districts on how fans would react to the guidelines that are in place.

But, first impressions do matter and imperative for us as fans to start on the right foot in this type of situation in order to give hope for other sports.

Now, for the not so fun part.

During the weekend, seeing local reporters and myself included observing what was seen in the stadium are receiving hate from fans that have different views.

It is contradictive for fans to call reporters snitches and wanting their favorite team’s season canceled. Why would a sports reporter snitch and want a season canceled if they are actively doing their job in the stadium and taking notes of the fans when they have noted fan behavior when bad calls take place, a big play occurs or an injury is on the court or field.

Whether you support or believe in masks, it is required in venues for entry and for some school districts, to be worn throughout the event. If masks are a burden for you, please catch the live stream of the game that you planned on attending.

Please note that TXHSGBB.com does not have any direct tie-in or direct contact to the UIL so ‘snitching’ is impossible for us.

Few might ask what the next step is or the UIL if the crowd scenes might not change.

A viral video in Utah showed a school administrator stopping a game for fans  to social distance and disperse big crowds. The student section left the game as a result.

This is not about what you as a fan think is right, your beliefs in masks or political views, this is a requirement in order for sports to take place.

If you don’t agree with these guidelines, you are asked to not attend the game.

Inevitably, it might take something major for people to realize that their decision are critical for football season to have another week.
