With seven rule changes being on the agenda in the National Federation of State High School Federation Basketball Rule Committee, all of them were approved by the Board of Directors in the meeting in Indianapolis on April 23-25.
Starting in the 2024-25 season, the jersey number must not be the same color as the jersey itself. For those that may not know, the jersey number can be the same color only if a contrasting color is around the number. The NFHS approved a five-year implementation date to allow schools to purchase new uniforms.
Players have voiced their displeasure of not rolling shorts in the past and now, they can start back the trend.
A note was added to permit folding and rolling shorts at the waistband seam, bringing back the popular trend.
Assistant coaches are now also allowed to step onto the court for when a fight breaks out on the court.
The held ball (widely known as a jump ball) signal will have a new look with officials using a straight arm with an open palm extended while also sounding the whistle to stop the clock.
Other rules taken part was the use of a mouth-guard, which is optional in Texas, and headbands, which was expanded from two inches to three inches in width to be consistent with volleyball. Hair-control devices are not required to meet any color restrictions.
