Wagner top Cedar Park to end 62-game winning streak

Standout sophomore LA Sneed finished with a game high 23 points as the Lady Thunderbirds topped two-time defending state champions Cedar Park and snapped the 62-game winning streak.

Cedar Park, who lost Gisella Maul in the off-season as she graduated early, have a roster that is young but still possess state tournament experience as they should not be slept on in Region IV.

Wagner led by as much as 14 late in the third quarter until Cedar Park rode a 6-0 run sparked by Tatum Ott long-range basket.

Molly Ly cut the deficit once more with a basket after collecting her own rebound.

With the nine-point lead, Wagner followed up with a 8-2 run that sealed the game, with Sneed anchoring the offense.

Wagner did make the early statement early in the region, and state, with the victory.

Duncanville name interim head coach

Following the suspension of current head coach LaJeanna Howard, Duncanville announced that Jason Rogers will be serving as interim head coach for the 2022-23 season. The Pantherettes, who currently are starting a three-year suspension from the UIL on violations of recruiting, will remain to be a top team in 6A this year despite being banned from the postseason.

Lubbock High survive San Angelo Central

Depth was key in overcoming a key injury on the Lady Westerner team as Lubbock High picked up the season-opening win over San Angelo Central at home, 53-43.

San Angelo Central were in control of the game early with a solid backcourt led by Jewels Perez, but picking up an injury midway through the first quarter in what appeared to be a twisted ankle.

Perez did not return to the game.

From that point, Lubbock High rode a 11-2 run from key plays behind Mecailin Marshall, who finished with 10 points in the first half, and Izzy Palmer, who finished with 11 points all from the free-throw line.

Marshall also picked up a lower back injury mid-way in the second quarter attempting to take a charge. She returned to the game but was immediately subbed out.

Faith Ford stepped up in the interior, finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds to led the Lady Westerners.

Anna Wierzowiecki finished with a game-high 15 points in the victory as she stepped up, filling the shoes of Perez.

Cinco Ranch upset College Station

The scoring duo of sophomore Aniya Foy and Dani Williams led the Lady Cougars to an upset victory over 5A #5 College Station, 52-45, at home.

Foy led the team in scoring with 19 points and shot 67 percent form the floor. Williams added 16 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals in the victory.

What to watch on Saturday, November 5

5A #3 Frisco Liberty vs. 5A #4 Amarillo

Easily the game of the day, the Lady Sandies impressed with their victory over Dallas Pinkston yesterday and have the athleticism to hang around in big games.

Liberty bring in freshman talent Jacy Abi, who is on the ESPN national freshman watch list, and will be discipled and well-coached, entering the matchup.

The big key will be the defense and how Liberty’s front court can match-up with Amarillo’s athletic guards in press situations.

3A #17 Tuscola Jim Ned vs. 2A #19 Muenster

Jim Ned graduated key players from last year but talented underclassmen will be filling in roles and could have an immediate impact in playing time.

Muenster, who graduated heavy, will have a new look to the roster but will have size and will be well-coached.

Jim Ned’s front-court will be the key in getting the Lady Indian offense rolling in order to find a quick start.

6A #18 Royse City vs. 4A #2 Waco La Vega (played at Waxahachie Life)

Royse City bring in a senior-laden roster, led by Nicole Weaver, Kayla Kimbrough, Shelby Aldridge and Alexia Lohman as the Lady Bulldogs were bumped up into the 6A ranks.

La Vega return all five starters from a year ago as the Lady Trojans look to return to the state tournament, where they have seen state title game appearances.

La Vega do have the edge in the front-court as the interior play will be key for both teams in order to establish themselves early.
