As the UIL contract with the Alamodome had now run out, fans across the state now turn to the possibilities of another facility hosting the premiere event that showcases the best teams in the state in late February through early March.

There are currently some rumored options for the move that include a split venue host for the boys and girls state tournaments, according to the Austin American-Stateman. For some coaches, that would be a solid move as long as the venue is nice.

Here are five possibilities that the state tournament could be moving to, in no order of favorite venue.

A contract renewal with the Alamodome

Let’s be honest, the setup for the state tournament is a bit awkward with about one-quarter of the venue being used for the setup along with a three-quarter empty facility and black curtains filling the back of the home stands. Many fans find parking and accessibility much more easier than the Drum in Austin and a renewed contract with the four-time Final Four hosts is not out of the question

Ferrell Center, Waco

According to sources, Baylor University has been attempting to get the state tournament for quite a while now and geography-wise, the move makes sense with Waco being the more ‘central’ location in the state of Texas and the drive being almost the same for fans all over.

The Ferrell Center seats 10,347 and for the girls side, it’s the home of one of the top programs in Texas.

College Park Center, Arlington

A mid-major hosting a state tournament? This might be a long shot but could happen. College Park Center holds 7,000 fans and can provide a tough environment when fans are rowdy. DFW is one of the top metro areas in terms of talent but the question that is brought up is the fact that the DFW area is also hosting the football state championships, which can cause some debate.

Schoolmaier Arena, Fort Worth

Another DFW venue that might not sound like a venue that can host but has been rumored by sources.

With the arena holding 8,500, this can also be a tough place to play for some teams, when the noise levels are high.

The same question from above is also applied here, with DFW hosting state football along with TCU games as well.

A move to Houston?

Just like football, basketball might have the experiment to Houston, where the community is basketball-heavy. Katy’s Merrell Center and the new Houston Ferfitta Center are suitable hosts for the event. The problem that arises in the travel for the teams out west from Amarillo and Lubbock areas that make the trip.

Some venues may be deemed as a “long shot” but cannot be ruled out. The most important thing that will influence the decision is the revenue that will be made to the respective city.
