Spring Branch Memorial can shoot – The Lady Mustangs have found themselves in the quarterfinals of the tournament as they defeated Reagan behind the play of Riley McCloskey, who convered six long-range baskets to tally a team high.

Samantha Wagner recorded a game high 32 points in the victory.

Austin High go 2-0: Facing a tough test in Cibolo Steele in the winner’s bracket second round, Austin High prevailed in a hard-fought contest, earning a 62-58 victory over the Lady Knights.

In the victory, Senaida Barrientos led the team in scoring with 20 points. Shantel Ried and Jade Clack finished with 16 points respectively. Aubrey Ried added eight in a winning effort.

Austin face San Antonio Johnson 1:30 p.m. at home.

San Antonio Johnson earn comeback victory over Clark: Ja’Shelle Johnson showed her toughness in the fourth quarter, as the Lady Jags picked up a tough victory over district rival Clark, 57-54.

Johnson finished with a game-high 22 pts, five rebounds and five steals in the victory in which the Lady Jags were kept pace with Clark, who had the size advantage.

Clark were led by Aaliyah Roberson, who tallied a team-high 19 pts.

Pflugerville quietly go 2-0: The Lady Panthers of Pflugerville carried their business as usual, earning wins over San Antonio Brandeis and New Braunfels, and now earn a game against the defending 5A state champions, Cedar Park.

Pflugerville is very sound defensively and can grab steals quickly. If the Panthers can compete with Cedar Park, Region III-5A will have another contender to deal with.

OTHER TOURNAMENT NOTES

Duncanville go 2-0 in the tournament, facing Waco University in the opener and Austin Bowie in the second round of the tournament.

The real test for the Pantherettes will be today, facing No. 10 Langham Creek at 1:30 p.m. and the winner of 4A No. 1 Hardin-Jefferson/No. 23 Spring Branch Memorial in the night cap at 7:30 p.m.

Despite falling to Steele in the opener, Manvel picked up a victory in the consolation bracket against Killeen, 52-39.

The No. 16 team in 5A will be taking on Laredo United at 12 p.m., in Austin High School.

TEAMS TO WATCH

San Antonio Johnson – Ja’Shelle Johnson showed toughness and tenacity in the win over Clark last night, and will be the main spark for the offense to try to earn an upset win against Austin High.

Langham Creek – Outside of De Soto and Duncanville, the Lady Lobos are in the thick of the Region II-6A race this year and keeping the margin close against Duncanville may turn heads, but a victory can show that they deserve a spot in the regional title contenders in the a loaded region.

San Antonio Reagan – Sammie Wagner finished with 32 points on her birthday yesterday despite falling to a sharp-shooting Spring Branch Memorial team, but let’s not count out the Lady Rattlers as they are looking to finish strong in the NAMI Bracket.
