Longtime girls basketball fans will remember it’s been a while for the Austin area to be included in Region I and this year features a few teams in the Austin area to be a part of the region.

5-3A received a facelift with Blanco, Brady, Comfort, Florence, Ingram Moore and Llano enter the region.

Blanco will be the main team to watch in the district along with Llano, who have been riding the momentum of consecutive postseason appearances.

In the eastern half of the region, all eyes will be on Peaster, who return everyone once again after a regional tournament run and look to get over the South Plains hump.

As Nocona, Bowie and Holliday graduate their key players, City View return a solid core that could make noise in the district and regional race respectively.

The western half of the region may not feature a solid front-runner that we all know but the depth is there despite the big name teams of Canadian, Idalou, Shallowater and Brownfield losing key pieces in their starting rotation.

Childress may be a team to keep an eye on with a senior-laden roster coming up along as Shannon Fisher starts up his second year.

Spearman will have more experience this coming year with a senior-heavy squad that will have a new coach at the helm.

Shallowater will have a new look with a new coach in Kurt Richardson taking the helm of a heavy-decorated program.

Jim Ned and Wall will look to continue to have defensive battles in 6-3A as the Lady Indians will look to repeat their deep run and hope for a regional final appearance.

7-3A

City View are on the rise and are looking to make noise in the region with a solid core returning. 4A drop-down Iowa Park will also contend for the district title, as they return their leading scorer. Bowie and Holliday also add to the depth in a very deep Texhoma district.

6-3A

Jim Ned and Wall, that’s it right? No. Merkel lose their main playmaker and their coach and look to start fresh with a new incoming coach to pave the way for another playoff apperance. Ballinger is also a tough out for teams in the district along with the addition of Coahoma, who claimed the district title in 5-3A last season and will definitely add a deeper district.

2-3A

As Idalou lose a key piece to graduation and other via transfer, all eyes will be on Childress, as they have a solid returning core to set up a deep playoff run. Shallowater lose a key piece of their team core and with a new coach may come a new look team for the Fillies. Abernathy will definitely be a competitive team to try to punch a ticket to the playoffs.
