2A/5A State title game recap

Frisco Liberty 60, Mansfield Timberivew 51

Jaci Abii was meant to be on the big stage.

The sophomore guard sparked a 8-0 run in the start of the fourth quarter along with a key three from Aniyah Farrier that gave the key push for the successful title defense for the Lady Redhawks, and giving a 60-51 victory over a tough Timberview team.

Liberty erased a 10-point deficit from the third quarter and closed the third quarter on a 7-2 run with the help of Abii and Farrier.

Abii finished with 30 points, shooting 50 percent from the field and collecting 12 rebounds that helped her gain most valuable player honors for the state championship game.

Martin’s Mill 44, Nocona 42

It’s exactly the play that Kara Nixon dreamed up, a game-winning basket.

The freshman guard went coast-to-coast and gave the Lady Mustangs their first state title since 2019.

Nixon scored the final 12 points for the Lady Mustangs, earning her the most valuable player award for the championship game.

The game-winning sequence followed with junior guard Megyn Meekins splitting a pair of free-throws in attempt to win the game from the line.

The Lady Indians went three-for-seven from the free throw line in the fourth quarter and shot 50 percent in the final 29 seconds of the game while holding a two-point lead.

Martin’s Mill capitalized on the opportunities given with a key three from Nixon at the 1:40 mark in the fourth quarter that cut the Nocona lead down to 40-39.

Skylar Smith was sent to the line after being fouled and was able to make one of the two free throw.

Nixon answered the call again, converting another three point basket that saw the Lady Mustangs claim the first lead since the second quarter.

Nocona’s free throw struggles continued in the final stages of the game with Megyn Meekins, who put together an impressive showing with a team high 16 points, split the pair of free throws after being fouled.

Nixon, who scored the final nine points upon this point, went baseline-to-baseline, released a floater from the right elbow and converted the basket as the whistle blew and time expiring that was the game winner.
